What is the difference between aftershave, eau de toilette and eau de parfum?

It is the concentration of fragrance oil. Aftershave (or eau de cologne) is the lightest, typically 2–4% oil, and fades within a couple of hours. Eau de toilette is around 5–15% and lasts most of a working day. Eau de parfum is 15–20% and usually lasts into the evening. Parfum or extrait is the strongest and most expensive per millilitre. Is a cheaper bottle the better buy?

Not necessarily. Compare like with like first: the same name may be available as eau de toilette, eau de parfum and parfum, in several sizes. Then divide the total price by the bottle size. For example, 50ml at £35 is 70p per ml, while 100ml at £52 is 52p per ml. The larger bottle offers better unit value, but the smaller one may still be the sensible choice if you are trying the scent for the first time or will not finish a large bottle.
