Expect shorter wear time and plan to reapply once during the day rather than over-spraying in the morning.

Autumn: woods, spice and dry warmth

As temperatures drop, scent sits closer to the skin and lasts noticeably longer, so this is the point in the year to bring back structure. Autumn belongs to cedar, vetiver, tobacco and warm spice — compositions with a dry backbone rather than pure sweetness. They suit knitwear and coats, which hold woody notes for days.

Winter: resins, vanilla, oud and leather

Cold, dry air suppresses evaporation, so a fragrance that felt overwhelming in August often becomes perfectly balanced in December. This is the season for the richest end of the shelf — amber, incense, oud, vanilla and leather — the kind of scent that leaves a trace in a room after you have left it. Floral

The largest family in perfumery, built around a single flower (a soliflore, usually rose or jasmine) or a bouquet of several. Modern florals often sit on a musk or woody base so they last longer than the flowers themselves ever would.

Rose, jasmine, tuberose, peony, gardenia, iris, orange blossom.
Who it suits
Anyone who wants a recognisable, classically feminine or genuinely unisex signature. Iris and violet florals in particular are worn widely by men.
When to wear it
Daytime, spring and summer. Tuberose and gardenia are the exceptions — they are dense enough for evening wear all year.

Citrus & fresh

Bright, transparent scents built on citrus oils, aromatic herbs and clean musk. They are the shortest-lived family because citrus molecules are volatile, which is why colognes are traditionally splashed generously.

Amber & oriental

Warm, resinous perfumes descended from the classic 'oriental' style: labdanum, benzoin and incense stacked with spice and vanilla. Rich, slow-moving and unmistakably formal.

Who it suits
Evening and cold weather. A strong choice for anyone who wants presence and does not mind being noticed.
When to wear it

Gourmand

Edible accords borrowed from patisserie — vanilla, caramelised sugar, tonka, coffee, chocolate — usually anchored by a woody or musky base so they do not smell purely like dessert.

Two related classical structures. Chypre pairs bergamot with oakmoss, labdanum and patchouli; fougère pairs lavender with coumarin and moss — the traditional barbershop shape behind most twentieth-century men's fragrance.

Who it suits
Anyone who likes a tailored, slightly austere scent. These are the grown-up alternatives to sweet designer releases.

Spicy

Warmth with an edge: pepper and cardamom lift a composition at the top, while cinnamon, clove and ginger sit in the heart and add bite to woods and amber.

Does the season really matter?
Heat pushes fragrance off the skin faster, so light citrus and floral scents read cleanly in summer while heavier amber, oud and vanilla compositions hold their shape in cold air. Most people keep two or three bottles and rotate.
Is eau de parfum better value than eau de toilette?
Eau de parfum carries more perfume oil, so it usually lasts longer per spray and costs more per bottle. Compare the price per millilitre across retailers before deciding — the same bottle often varies by a wide margin between stores.
