Black Opium vs Libre: which YSL should you buy?

5 September 2026 · Perfumebuddy

Yves Saint Laurent has two modern pillars, and shoppers ask us to compare them more than any other pair. Black Opium and Libre are both bold, both long-lasting, and they smell nothing alike.

Black Opium: coffee and vanilla

Black Opium opens on black coffee and pink pepper, then moves quickly into white flowers and a rich vanilla-patchouli base. It is warm, sweet and gourmand — an evening fragrance that works beautifully in cold weather and can feel heavy in high summer. The flankers shift the balance rather than the character: Le Parfum is deeper and more vanillic, while the lighter editions push the florals forward.

Libre: lavender and orange blossom

Libre is the opposite temperament. Lavender — traditionally a masculine note — sits over orange blossom and jasmine, with vanilla and musk underneath. The result is crisp and slightly aromatic at the top, warm and skin-like at the base. It is easier to wear during the day and in an office than Black Opium, and it suits people who find gourmands cloying.

Which lasts longer

Both perform well. In eau de parfum, expect a solid working day from either. The Le Parfum and Intense concentrations push that further and project more strongly in the first hours, which matters more for evening wear than for daily use.

Which to buy

Choose Black Opium if you want warmth, sweetness and presence after dark. Choose Libre if you want something you can wear to work every day without thinking about it. If you cannot decide, Libre is the safer first bottle.

Sizes worth comparing

Larger bottles are usually better value per millilitre, but not always — the 150ml is only worth it if you are certain. Compare live retailer prices for Black Opium 150ml, Black Opium Le Parfum 90ml, Libre 90ml and Libre Le Parfum 90ml.
